In its resolve to make mobility more digitally equipped, NHAI has successfully launched Electronic Toll Collection through FASTag all over the country. This move does not only help India step up its digital readiness, it also leads the country in being more time and cost-efficient by saving fuel, time and pollution.
Its implementation was started from 08.00 today, 15th December, on all NHAI Toll Plazas. To ensure seamless movement of traffic, all the 523 Toll Plazas of NHAI have been fully equipped with the required ETC infrastructure.
However, since the number of vehicles without FASTag still hover at a high number, 75 per cent lanes were kept as FASTag lanes and up to 25 per cent lanes were kept as hybrid lanes for cash as well as a digital transaction. This was done considering the convenience of the commuters who have still not installed FASTag on their vehicle.
NHAI officials have been working tirelessly to implement the FAStag mandate successfully with every toll plaza being supervised by a nodal officer at the ground and monitored at regional and head-quarter level Control and Command centres.
To further ease implementation and operation, regional officers have also been authorized to take on the spot decision for conversion to hybrid lanes up to 25 per cent on case to case basis. This is done with the intent of avoiding a pile-up of traffic at high traffic volume fee plazas.
To ensure smooth traffic regulation, adequate number of Marshals have been deputed at each toll plaza for smooth traffic regulation. Additionally, they will also educate and request commuters to buy FASTag, by telling them how to get and recharge FASTag through pamphlets and public announcements.
In addition to this, various Toll plazas came up with novel methods such as distributing flowers and chocolates to encourage commuter to adopt FASTag. The implementation of a digitally transformative technology such as FAStag will lead to a positive behavioural shift of NH commuters and will further enhance their travel experience.
Studies have shown than smooth passing without stopping at Toll Plazas is likely to save thousands of crores every year for the nation. All the Highway commuters who are still without Fastag are requested to install it on their vehicle and help save their own and other commuters time and money.
