Mobile usage is increasing worldwide, especially in India, where people use their smartphones to do everything from ordering groceries to conversing with friends to making business transactions and gaming. With the advancement of technology in this sector, this usage is expected to increase even more.

According to a recent report published by the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA), India is one of the top five global gaming markets. The gaming business is expected to reach a staggering $ 2.8 billion by 2020, with Indians playing mobile games at least twice a day and people of all ages indulging in virtual games.

Why is Mobile Gaming Appealing to Indians?

According to a report by CLSA, due to a lack of internet connection, expensive smartphone pricing, high data rates, and a lack of digital payment infrastructure, the growth of digital services have been slowed down for many years.

The rise of India’s gaming sector is fueled by rising digital adoption, a growing online population, affordable smartphones, and low data prices. According to Deepti Chaturvedi, an analyst at CLSA, there has been a considerable increase in personal computer and console gaming in India. Still, these are not as widespread as mobile games.

With all these advantages to game players, the players can earn real money from playing online games. For example, during the COVID pandemic in India, online gaming has allowed many players to make money from the comfort of their homes. Poker, rummy, sports like football and cricket, quizzes, and warfare games are among the games from which players can earn real money.

The lottery is another vital game among Indians. There are many lotteries run by the government, of which the Kerala State Lottery is very popular. It is the first type of lottery program in India, established in 1967, under Kerala’s government lottery department. These lotteries are gaining popularity, and players can see the results through Lottery Sambad website on a daily basis. Governments have attained extraordinary economic stability by employing this lottery approach.

Game Downloads

During the pandemic, the demand for online games has increased dramatically, with more players than ever before preferring to play on their smartphones over laptops and PCs.

India’s gaming sector, which currently stands at $ 1.2 billion, is predicted to increase to $ 3 billion by 2023, with Gen-Z accounting for a third of the population. In addition, India now has over 365 million mobile gamers, and this number is likely to increase rapidly.

Between the second quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2020, a review f app downloading during COVID revealed a 20 percent rise in games downloaded from the iOS App Store. At the same time, the Android App Play Store saw a 51 percent rise in in-game downloads.

India’s Leading Mobile Gaming Startups

India now has over 400 gaming companies and 90 game development facilities thanks to the Government's Make in India program. These digitally adept startups are offering work opportunities for youth. In addition, in response to the potential of the gaming industry, many institutes around the country are offering technical courses to become game developers and designers.

According to the research, Nazara (which includes collaborations like Airtel eSports Tour for PUBG mobile), Dream 11, Games 24x7, Paytm First Games, Mobile Premier League, and JioGames are among India's top mobile gaming players. Nazara is also planning an IPO, and the company has invested more than ₹300 crores in gaming over the last five years. It has raised ₹100 crores at a $ 365 million valuation.

Similarly, Tencent’s $1 billion unicorn Dream 11 sponsored the 2020 Indian Premier League. Games24x7 is backed by Tiger Global, which has a portfolio of skill-based and casual games. Paytm First Games, a part of Paytm, features 300 games and a 45 million strong gaming community. According to the report, JioGames, a joint venture between RelianceJio and Media Tek, has created a Gaming Masters/eSports event and is teaming with Microsoft to deliver Microsoft Cloud to India.
