Mission Admission

As students scramble to get into colleges of their choice, and some colleges battle with government agencies over independence related to entrance tests and other selection criteria, here's a career that beckons: college consulting. More so, if you are planning to apply to colleges in the US.

Michele Hernandez, a former admissions office executive at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, and owner of Hernandez College Consulting, has made it into a very lucrative business. She charges $42,000 for helping students improve and become ideal candidates for the colleges of their choice. The process starts early, when the child is in the eighth grade.

Her past experience gives her an edge in assessing the formula or scale that admissions offices use in determining which students would be admitted. For those who make their decisions late, Hernandez's firm runs a four-day summer Application Boot Camp at $14,000 a pop. You have no money? You can recover it in financial aid.
