In this era of digitization, when every sector is utilizing digital innovation to increase the profit margin, the mining sector refuses to be an exception. The mining industry is using computerized devices and digital data to improve their productivity while transforming safety protocols. India, despite being rich in mining potential, managed to gather only 1.53% GDP contribution from this sector in the period of 2012-2013. Given this crisis, the Indian mining companies are adopting digital routes to transform and overcome the entire situation. Leaving the traditional mining practices behind, the companies have started to use drones and IoT networking for enhanced efficiency.
Talking about the digital revolution in the Indian mining sector, there are some visionary startups that are stepping in to support this sector with their innovative ideas. One such mention-worthy name is Minocular. With an aim to support mining operations with an automated approach, the company started its journey in December 2016 through the hands of two friends Puru Agrawal and Mohit Sahu. With their base in Raipur(Chhattisgarh), which is a hub of mines, Mohit says that the entire solution is built in the mines.
In order to improve operational efficiency, the mining industry around the world is witnessing the growing trend of drone & IoT usage in the mines. The application of drones offers access to visual data especially in those areas which are difficult to access. It makes the entire process of surveying and mapping a lot more convenient while reducing the chances of risk exposure. The usage of drones can enhance the entire monitoring system and enhance the safety levels, especially for ground workers. MinoAir, the drone analytics platform by Minocular, can be an ideal example of how drone technology can enhance the operational functionality of the mines. Using their in-house developed drone analytics platform, mines can process their own drone maps (both 2D and 3D), gather precise ground data, and use all the results in both short-term and long-term planning. It makes a time-consuming process like mapping and planning comfortable for the companies.
The mining industry has also begun to embrace the IoT revolution. An affordable solution IoT networking grants connectivity among all the assets in a mining area including dumpers, excavators, weight bridges, and quality analyzers. IoT platforms use real-time data to provide several useful metrics like asset uptime and effectiveness, drilling optimization, and fuel efficiency among many other things. Minocular’s IoT network utilizes 2D and 3D drone maps to enhance minefield operational functionality. While commenting on the mining industry and digitization, Minocular co-founder Puru Agrawal remarked, “We noticed that there was no technology being used at any stage of the mining operations. After many visits to mines, understanding their problems, working with the managers, surveyors, blast managers, and dumper operators, and more, Minocular was launched as an integrated platform for the mining industry,”
With its visionary mining solutions, Minocular has gathered considerable attention in the mining industry and also earned a grant from Tide 2.0 through CIIE. The company is planning to develop an MVP precision drone measurement solution and IoT sensors that work even in no network areas, utilizing this grant.
Many renowned enterprises like Nuvoco Vistas Corp. Ltd., Dalmia Cement Bharat Ltd., SAIL, Ultratech Cement Ltd., etc have implemented Minocularto to foster a systemized mining operation through their platform. As the mining enterprises have already started to recognize the importance of digitization in a risk-involved industry like mining, chances are high that more companies like Minocular will emerge to offer some avant-garde mining solutions.
