Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services (Mahindra Finance) today delivers financial services, advice and support to over six million Indians in more than 3,60,000 villages — or one in every two villages in the country. The company recruits employees at the local level, and they speak the local language and understand the local challenges. MD Ramesh Iyer talks to BW Businessworld’s Manish Kumar Jha about the company’s people-focused culture.

On the specific employee requirements of a BFSI company
We at Mahindra Finance, appreciate a strong strategic business orientation in order to create breakthrough business impact. We also expect a high degree of customer focus for co-creating solutions and enhancing our service delivery. We have been nurturing these competencies in our organisation through various structured development interventions for our employees. These conscious efforts are aimed at sustaining the desired competencies at expected levels for various stakeholders involved.
On the evolution of the company’s people practices
The organisation has ventured into newer markets from historically being a tractor financing company to being a diversified financial services provider. In 2015-16, the core business vertical underwent a major restructuring from a geography based to a product based structure. In alignment with the business restructuring, the ecosystem has also adapted to various iterations such as the people management has evolved from being operational to being a more strategic contributor. We have a heterogeneous mix of employees, and the scope of our policies and practices are in such a way that we have been able to cater to maximum beneficiaries.
