In an unusually strong measure, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday (3 August) suspended 25 members of the Congress for five days for causing continuous disruptions and disorder in the Lower House.

She had earlier issued repeated warnings to the protesting Congress MPs not to wave placards in the House.

Sushmita Dev, Gaurav Gogoi, Deepender Hooda, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury are among the members to have been suspended from the House.

One of the suspended Congress members said the suspension was unusually harsh, unjust. The members said their protests would continue.

The Congress has been demanding the resignation of Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and Chief Ministers Vasundhara Raje and Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The Congress had given an indication of the party’s hardened stance when Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi said in the morning that Parliament won’t transact any business unless the the resignatyions come in.
