Limited Application

The government's decision to appoint an agency that would allow people to file RTI (Right To Information) requests online and through call centres is commendable. The current process of filing RTI applications using Indian Postal Orders is cumbersome and time consuming.

The new service comes with a caveat though: only credit and debit card holders or those with access to Internet banking will be able to use this service, which requires a fee to be paid at the time of filing an application.

Perhaps, teaming  up with Internet service providers could be a better option with the RTI fee directly appended to the Internet bill. It would be best if the web portal and the call centre are integrated as a single entity.

Also, the government is infamous for announcing ambitious plans and then putting them in cold storage. It should get its act together at least for once.

Credit ratings agency Moody's investors Service has downgraded the credit ratings of 26 Italian banks. The ratings cut have been attributed to the lenders'  increasing loan defaults and funding problems that could crop up in the future.
