Lighthouse Effect From Smart Cities On Environment
India’s smart cities programme is attracting and inspiring governments, cities and companies from many countries

The Indian government’s project to transform 100 Indian cities into smart cities is an impressing programme that will help grow newer companies and inspire cities and countries all over the world. The lighthouse effect from the smart cities in India will also have a huge impact on the environment globally. The digitalisation, the access to open data and information provides an opportunity for citizens’ engagement, especially the young population.
India’s smart cities programme is attracting and inspiring governments, cities and companies from many countries. I think that the large number of smart cities in India will also attract a lot of new visitors and tourists.
We will continue developing further the transnational learning between India and other countries. For example, the Swedish and the Indian governments have recently signed a MoU for collaboration on smart sustainable cities and innovation.
Service innovation to reach SDGs faster: In order to develop an attractive sustainable society based on peoples’ needs and lives, it is important to find more holistic solutions and new business models for an integrated development of cities and societies. Buildings, infrastructure, mobility and other areas must be connected with each other physically and digitally and in new organizations’ models.
Use of resources — circular economies: The development of more service and service-oriented companies is essential for ensuring and maintaining a good quality of life and raising the living standards for more people. A growing population will also contribute to the demand for more healthcare. It will therefore become important to combine innovative services with the traditional offers of the future healthcare system.
The technologies: Technologies develop quickly in different sectors and already many existing solutions can be integrated and replicated in the cities. The exciting tools and techniques can also be used in new ways, in new fields and areas.
Here are some examples from European Smart Cities projects that are ready to be replicated worldwide.
Controllable Urban Soundscapes (TOR): Noise pollution is a major cause of physiological and psychological stress among urban citizens. The aim of the TOR-project is to create oases of tranquility in public spaces as a natural part of the city centre.
LoV-IoT: This project focuses on environmental surveillance with Internet of Things. With real-time data, the municipality can decide about and act on needed measures in time and avoid harmful consequences. The aim is also to engage the citizens to change their polluting behavior.
IRIS — Integrated and Replicable Solutions for Co-creation in Sustainable Cities: IRIS is a HORIZON 2020 EU-funded project that was launched in October 2017 for a duration of five years. Under IRIS, we will find and test new solutions for urban development in the areas of energy, mobility and ICT.
SCORE — Smart Cities and Open data RE-use: In the SCORE project funded by EU InterReg North Sea Region, nine Cities are working to improve public service delivery based on smart data-driven solutions.
FED — Fossil-free Energy Districts: The Fossil-free Energy Districts project is an innovative effort by the City of Gothenburg to decrease the use of energy as well as cut dependence on fossil fuels in a builtup environment.
HSB Living Lab: HSB Living Lab is a journey towards future housing. At Chalmers in Gothenburg, students and researchers now live and work in a residential building to test innovations and technical solutions for the next generation of housing.
