It is a well-established fact that the world of academics often equates with the professional realm. While the students are guided by the curriculum of subjects, once they are out to face the world with a degree, things often turn out to be different than what was expected. Hence, a well-versed student might also find himself or herself intimidated by the professional standards and expectations. That is why practical training during the course study offers these students a taste of the real world.

In case of law students pursuing their degree courses, practical training can be imparted through internship and moot court sessions conducted in various law institutions. Moot courts offer a hypothetic situation mimicking the scenarios of a real court of law. Here, a team of students are presented with a hypothetical case and they are required to prepare the case and present it before the presiding judge. In these sessions, students get an opportunity to understand the cases and do research accordingly. While doing so, they are able to hone their research skills along with developing a knack for analysis and advocacy. As they prepare to appear before a judge, they are able to frame their end arguments and prepare a brief which would allow them a better understanding on the interpretation of law.

Besides understanding the law, moot courts help the students learn the courtroom etiquettes which help them later in their professional lives, in case they opt for litigation. They also get to meet as well as work with legal professionals which enrich their professional network. Once they begin their practice, these contacts often give them a professional mileage.

In the case of internships, students get to work on actual litigation cases along with senior legal practitioners which offer them a better view of legal practice. As they work on these cases, they learn to interpret the laws while preparing drafts. They come across the practical procedures which make them more prepared for the future challenges they might face once they are out in the field with a degree in hand. Internships also help develop several other skills which are useful in professional lives. A student may only strive for better grades and end up learning various laws and its provisions without even understanding the interpretations and meanings. During the internships, one gets the chance to communicate with clients, colleagues as well as peers in order to present the application of a law in the real world. Also, while doing such researches, students learn more about the laws which are no longer in use or have bare minimum applicability in today’s world. They get to work on practical issues which are more demanding in nature and thus need greater attention from lawyers or legal practitioners. While doing so, they get an in-depth knowledge of such regulations or rules which help them secure a better job with some of the most coveted employers.

In a nutshell, practical training helps today’s law students become a better lawyer tomorrow. It promotes a better understanding of the profession by bridging the gap between the academic realm and the real world.
