The number of car models available for purchase in India in 1990 was 3; besides the Fiat and Ambassador, there was new entrant Maruti. Car owners in 1990 took their prized vehicles for servicing as required. This often meant they spent an entire day at a service station but saw nothing wrong in it. This was because, back then, a car was a luxury and treated with tenderness by owners. In the early 1990s, car owners saved up and bought their first car at the age of 40 if not later. To most car owners, a car was a source of pride. 

Today there are hundreds of models to choose from including many that cost more than a house. A car is no longer a luxury but a necessity and educated middle-class Indians buy their first car before the age of 25. However, what hasn’t changed is how cars are serviced. Even today educated Indians in prestigious jobs spend half-a-day or an entire day waiting for their car to be serviced.  Despite the fact a car is no longer a status symbol and is likely to be replaced by a new model in less than 5 years by owners, many Indians are expected to treat it with as much devotion as their grandfathers treated Ambassadors and Fait’s decades ago.
