Himachal gets Krishi Karman Award for foodgrain production

Shimla, Mar 17 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh has been given Krishi Karman Award for its landmark achievement for the highest foodgrain production.

The Krishi Karman Award for year 2015-16 presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Himachal IT minister Ram Lal Markanda at a function organised at New Delhi today.

The award carried a trophy, citation and cash prize.

Besides, two progressive farmers of the state, including a woman farmer also received the prizes.

Congratulating the agriculture department for this outstanding achievement, Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture Srikant Baldi said this feat had been achieved due to dedicated efforts of the department in extending technological inputs and services to the farmers of the state.

The total food grains production in the state increased from 14.94 lakh tonnes to 16.40 lakh tonnes during last five years.

Besides, the department has also done commendable work in promoting poly-house cultivation, crop diversification, micro irrigation, organic farming and soil health management, Baldi added.

Krishi Karman Awards were instituted by the Union Ministry of Agriculture in 2010-11 to reward the best performing states in production of rice, wheat, cereals, pulses and total food grains.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur today stressed the need for effective implementation of all developmental and welfare programmes, and entrusted the responsibility to monitor the progress in different districts to ministers.

Cabinet minister Mahender Singh Thakur has been given the charge of Shimla district, Kishan Kapoor (Chamba), Suresh Bhardwaj (Kangra), Anil Sharma (Solan), Sarveen Chaudhary (Una), Ram Lal Markanda (Kinnaur), Vipin Singh Parmar (Bilaspur), Virender Kanwar (Hamirpur), Bikram Singh (Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti), Gobind Singh Thakur (Mandi) and Rajiv Saijal (Sirmour).
