IT major HCL Technologies is going to set up a global IT centre in Nagpur and will hire up to 2000 engineers.

Sanjay Gupta, senior vice-president, HCL said, “Nagpur offers quality local talent and scalable infrastructure. Recruitment for the 50-acre Nagpur campus to be operational by next January at MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur) will be conducted in three phases and 2,000 jobs will be offered.”

The selected candidates will undergo training in Noida. HCL is focusing on training centres in smaller towns and has set up centre in Madurai and Lucknow.

He added, "We are excited to start our operations in Nagpur. Through this initiative we aim to create 2,000 jobs in the city, creating a sustainable pipeline of local talent."

According to HCL’s ‘Talent Pipeline’ of the Top companies to work report, "The company recently recruited 200 high school students into an on-the-job training program for software engineers with the goal of developing a pipeline of skilled tech talent for entry-level jobs," said HCL's 'Talent Pipeline' section of the report.

"The company will prefer local talent. It is a part of HCL's long-term plan to source home talent at a centre. If an employee is from the same city, the chances of retention are more. For the seniors, there are equal growth opportunities in the smaller cities too," he said.

Naukri Job Speak index reported a four percent job decline on 13 June. Slow moving economy, H1b visa restrictions and rising protectionism has been a worrying cause for the IT professionals in India.

However, Sanjay Gupta said his company has very little dependence on H1B visas and prefers local talent since most of their work done is in India.
