Google’s One Black Spot

It may already be your favourite email account. Now it seems to be the rest of the world's as well. On 28 June, at a developer conference in San Francisco, Google said that at latest count, 425 million users use its Gmail email service. In over a hundred US universities, it is the preferred choice.

And it is not just email. Two years ago, Google's Internet browser Google Chrome had 70 million users; last year, that number went up to 160. And this year, it almost doubled again; globally, an estimated 315 million people use Google Chrome as their browser.

But Google TV, like Apple TV, seems to be going off the rails; the Mountain View, US-based company is not saying much about its foray into smart TV.

In theory, it is supposed to combine the experience of television watching with the power of the Web. But no one seems to have a handle on how it works.

Where is Google TV going? No one knows for sure, it seems.
