Good Morning Sunshine! Five morning rituals that will give you a good start to the day

Winter has set in here in Delhi, and those soft fluffy quilts I love, are out of their summer hideout closet. It’s made waking up in the morning that much more difficult. Even my two-year-old with his enthusiasm for life and limited vocabulary now tells me ‘5 minutes please’ when I try and wake him for pre-school.

Mornings are supposed to be the most productive time of the day. Yet for most of us, it’s nothing more than a race against the clock. So here’s a practical list of things you can do - actually do- that will make your mornings count:

1. You snooze, you lose
Don’t hit that snooze button. Just say to yourself 1…2….3! and jump out of bed before your mind can trick you with yet another reason why you should stay right there in that warm quilt. Not hitting the snooze button technically buys you an extra 10 minutes, and lots can be accomplished in that! Keep reading.

2. Do a seven-minute workout
Do this everyday and there actually isn’t much more you need to do for your fitness. Try it! Find an app that gives you your daily yoga fix, or any full body 7-minute workout. I promise you, you will not regret it. Added bonus, you get to tick working-out off your daily to-do list within a few minutes of waking up. In my Postnatal classes at Rosewalk, I often use this quick workout fix for my busy mums.

3. Drink water
Aim to chug down 2-4 glasses of water before you leave the house. Our daily water intake should never go below 1.5 litres per day, so getting through half of that before your day has even begun will go a long way to make sure you are not dehydrated.

4. Make a list of everything you want to accomplish today
Put it out of your mind and onto a piece of paper and into your work folder. You can even title this page- 'Today is going to be a great day!' Having a positive affirmation, an uncluttered mind, and organized thoughts will make the next part easier.

5. Practice mindfulness
Whatever you do, do it with your complete attention. If you are someone who finds meditation difficult, this is the next best thing. Pay attention to the warmth of the water as you run your bath, listen to your breathing as you put on your makeup, watch the curling wisps of steam as you sip your morning tea…just pay attention to yourself in your space, and enjoy this me-time.

These work for me, but go ahead and find your own ritual. And whatever it may be, remember, practice makes perfect. In this case, perfect mornings.
