Get Hold Of Your Time

At work, we often struggle to do things more efficiently. How often have you stopped, hours after starting the day, and looked at the time you spent and realised most of your day went in chasing things which took up a lot of time and didn't really need to be done? INVALUABLE: THE SECRET TO BECOMING IRREPLACEABLE (John Wiley & Sons), authored by time-management expert David Crenshaw, will help you plan your work, reduce your "less valuable activities (or LVAs)", and become, well, invaluable to your organisation.

The book is an easy read. The style is that of a parable, and so we follow the story of a young trainee trying to understand his role in a startup and his interactions with his immediate boss, his CEO and his coaches. The instructions given are part of Crenshaw's consulting practice.

How do you become invaluable for your organisation? By doing the most valuable activities (MVAs). And doing less of the LVAs. So the book (using two characters, a consultant and a grandfather) quickly sets up for young Jason, the protagonist, a method of working these out. At one level, you can't help thinking that the book is a bit too simplistic and it's another method for Crenshaw to sell his process. But it might make sense to most of us ‘time- stretched' and ‘resource-crunched' souls.
