No Indian who loves cricket can forget the 2007 T20 World Cup moment of Yuvraj Singh hitting the six sixes out of the park. Undeniably, Yuvraj Singh, Former Indian Cricketer, Humanitarian, & Author (or Yuvi as his fans call him) has set the bars as high as it can be for the young talents pursuing cricket as a profession. His book ‘The Test of My Life: From Cricket to Cancer and Back’ chronicles his journey through professional cricket and his days of battling the draining disease of cancer. The treatise provides food for thought for anyone seeking inspiration to get their lives back on track.
In a candid conversation with BW Businessworld at BW Dialogues, Singh shared his story of how despite life tried to knock him down several times, he has been able to prove his perseverance and strength. He shared various life lessons that he learned from during the days of struggling with cancer.
Looking back at the last ninety days, Singh agreed that it has been a tough time for the world. Though, he is positive for the future and believes that people will bounce back and come out from this grim situation. Undoubtedly, Singh had his journey so far filled with surprises and setbacks. He reckoned, “As a person, as an individual, I learned a lot in these two decades. I managed to be in focus despite hiccups.” Singh shared about the recent Sushant Singh Rajput demise: “It has ignited the conversations on mental health.” He shared that when a person is battling these issues, self-belief is very important in surmounting obstacles. ‘You should be around people who love you during difficult times,’ Singh added.
Yuvraj Singh, who was honoured with ‘The Man of The Series’ title in 2011 World Cup, addressed the news of his upcoming biopic. He confirmed, “Yes it is definitely on the cards; we are working on it. In the next coming months, you will have a picture of who is going to play the part.” Reportedly, the much-awaited biopic has attracted many eyeballs. Singh ‘personally’ felt that actor Siddhant Chaturvedi would be the best bet to portray him as he resembles a lot with him.
In September 2012, Singh had started his venture YouWeCan to help people fight the fatal disease of cancer through awareness, early detection, patient support, and survivor empowerment. Singh recollected: “Diagnosing with cancer after the World Cup was a low point in his life, and he had difficulty coming to terms with it. He described, the harrowing experience was like ‘falling from the sky to the ditch’. Singh shared that one life lesson cricket has taught him is to never give up on goals and dreams. He is also a firm believer that it is crucial to put individual needs aside for the team on the field. Giving his example, he shared that initially he wished to play in high order but his team needed him to bat in the middle order. “When I invest in people, the result gives me happiness,” Singh said.
