Viral outbreaks are fast spreading across the length and breadth of the world. The proliferation of infection has put the spotlight on the fast-food habits and the ready-to-eat culture that are becoming an indispensable part of our daily dietary routine. We need to reassess our dietary habits with a focus on the intake of natural foods that can boost our immune system and also reduce the risk of contamination.

To start with, fatty and fried food have to be steered clear of. The ingestion of high-fat, oily foodstuff lowers the immunity of the body, increasing the risk of infection from disease-producing microorganisms like viruses. A highly nutritious diet is the one that’s low in fat and high in fibre which is the key to combating the deleterious impact of viral infections.

The inclusion of Giloy as part of a daily dietary routine can help in eliminating toxins from the body, keeping it disease-free. The stem of the Giloy plant houses most of its nutrition.

It needs to be noted here that around 60-70 percent of the human body’s immune system is concentrated in the gut. A strong and healthy gut has the potential to play a pivotal role in the fight against preventing the viruses from invading the body. A gut-friendly diet comprising whole, unprocessed foods and probiotic foods like apple cider vinegar is essential to strengthen the health of the gut. Probiotics can be consumed in the form of both food and supplement.

Revisiting the healing powers of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of holistic medicine is the need of the hour. This discipline which stresses on the healing powers of natural home-grown herbs may hold the solution to fighting infection. It is common knowledge of Ayurveda that the antioxidant-rich Holy Basil or Tulsi leaves is the best antibiotic that Nature has ever given us.  Doctors and nutritionists highly recommend consuming Tulsi daily; it is said to have the potential to reduce the frequency of gastrointestinal disorders, bolster system immunity and prevent the onset of viral infections.

Maintaining the right nutritional balance in our everyday diet is the key to living healthy. It is imperative to include organic food products in our everyday diet. The ingestion of such foods not only provides us with the necessary essential nutrients to live a healthy life but also strengthens the resistance from viruses.

Covering our faces with masks, avoiding crowded places, and washing our hands frequently can also help in preventing the spread of coronavirus.
