“At the Faculty of Management Studies, the focus is on management education more than just business management. The commitment is thought leadership with a deep understanding of business,” says M.S. Singla, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi.
However, Singla points out that there is more to the institute than what is taught within its confines. FMS has the unique privilege of being part of one of the premier universities in the world — the University of Delhi — with some of the finest departments in economics, law, sociology, commerce and operations research. “Our collaborative approach which involves inputs from various departments gives us the benefit of a much wider view and deeper understanding,” he says.
The network of over 10,000 alumni gives students an unmatched access to information, mentors and careers. “FMS is one of the few B-schools in India, where a PhD is a pre-requisite for every permanent faculty member,” explains Singla. More than 90 per cent of the faculty members at FMS have been trained at the Harvard Business School, have presented research papers at international conferences and are involved in consulting and research projects for national and international organisations.
FMS also boasts of a high student-faculty ratio. The pedagogy, determined by the faculty, is a mixture of case studies, lectures and role plays, making learning interactive and intense.
FMS receives over 35,000 applications for their entrance exam of which only only 90 students are admitted to the Masters in Business Administration programme. It currently offers the following courses: MBA Full time, MBA Executive, MBA Executive HCA, Management Development Programme and Doctoral Programme.
Apart from the regular management programmes, students at FMS have the advantage of Shanti Prasad Jain Advanced Management Research Centre which was established in 1982 to promote management research, education and training of managers, executives and academicians associated with the management discipline.
“We are now looking forward to new Executive Development Programmes in Public Enterprise Management and Public Systems Management, Entrepreneurial Development, Strategic Management, Management of Services, Human Resource Development and such other areas of vital importance to the economy which have so far not been benefited from management education,” explains Singla about their expansion plans.
According to Singla, FMS has always had a legacy of securing stellar placements, both in terms of the compensation and the wide variety of profiles on offer. In the year 2014, 205 students secured 212 offers, ensuring 100 per cent placements. “Over 37 first-time recruiters visited the campus this season,” informs Singla.
While retaining its reputation as the marketing campus of the country, this year’s placement season witnessed a healthy participation across domains, ensuring that students had plenty of options to choose from to pursue careers in the field of their preference.
Interactive sessions which promote dialogue between industry stalwarts and students are a part of FMS culture. “In addition to continuous guest lectures that impart industry knowledge to the students, the annual convention and other conclaves provide an interface for students to interact with stalwarts of the corporate world and academicians,” explains Singla. FMS also has a very strong summer internship and live projects programme where students benefit from, pre-placement offers, live projects, industry exposure and interest alignment.
At FMS, hostel accommodation facilities are available to the students of MBA (full-time) programme at the post graduate hostels of the Delhi University. It is advisable that students directly contact the office of the concerned hostel and apply according to their admission procedures well in time.
What Sets FMS Apart?
Singla believes that there are various factors that set FMS apart from other B-schools. “FMS is doing better because of factors like: global brand equity of the University of Delhi, extremely supportive academic leadership at the university, locational advantage and industry support, unmatched faculty resource — permanent as well as guest faculty, outstanding alumni network, excellent students and rich traditions and institutional values,” says Singla.
