Knimbus Calls For Greater International Collaboration
Knimbus, a global search and collaboration platform that connects creators and users of Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) knowledge, called for greater international collaboration by researchers in India, citing it to be the key to improve productivity and to significantly increase the quantum of published research.

According to a study on India's research output and collaboration conducted by Thomson Reuters, India’s global research output stands at just 3.5 per cent of global research output in 2010. A selective discipline wise data split further highlights India’s abysmally low research output. In Mathematics, India’s share of world output stood at around 2 per cent in 2010 while it was 17 per cent for China.

International research collaboration can take many forms. It can range from researchers engaging informally in consultations, provide advice, participate in site visits, conferences or create complementary research agendas. While deeper forms of cooperation include joint research projects, the sharing of research facilities and major infrastructure, allowing access to research data and discoveries, and the linking of research centres and virtual networks.

Various factors are driving the trend of collaboration in research, including ease of communication, the growing complexity and cost of research especially in disciplines requiring specialized instrumentation or facilities, an opportunity to divide labor, share risks, improve the quality of research that comes from the pooling of different perspectives and increase research credibility.
