Remember lying comfortably in bed and watching Netflix for most parts of 2020? If the answer is yes, you weren’t alone. In a year when the world nearly came to a standstill and social distancing became the norm, human beings were forced to depend on technology more than ever before. In our personal lives, in-person gatherings were shifted to video calls, grocery runs became online orders, and vacations became staycations, among many other things. Businesses undertook their digitization journey overnight with challenges like – hardware availability issues, infrastructure for remote working, and most importantly - poor connectivity. While some of them were resolved over time, the issue of sub-standard connectivity led businesses and their ecosystem to fast-track innovation in 5G technology. The implementation of 5G technology can find solutions for real business problems and transform day-to-day operations due to features like low latency, high connectivity, and greater flexibility.

Work from home – the new normal

With the spread of the pandemic and the implementation of a nation-wide lockdown, most companies shifted from offices to work-from-home – a system that some are even exploring to make permanent. With the advent of  5G’s lower lag time and seamless connectivity of multiple devices, communication businesses will be able to become more agile in dealing with scheduling changes; Employees will be able to upload and share work-related files to the cloud faster and group video calls will be conducted in ultra HD quality thereby improving overall morale and productivity. With the 5G network, internet connectivity will become more reliable resulting in fewer dropped calls, a significant increase in speed, and better performance.

5G will transform the user experience

The 5G technology will not only help businesses resolve internal issues, but also build an experience for the consumers. Due to much lower latency, 5G will have the ability to perform heavy computing within seconds which makes it suitable to effectively support Augmented and Virtual reality technologies. In the retail industry, with the use of 5G, businesses will be able to allow customers to virtually experience the product using AR and VR – like placing furniture in the required location, trying out clothes, or testing the suitability of makeup virtually. It will introduce a new dimension in shopping, providing users with an immersive experience like never before. In the designing industry, 5G will empower businesses to visualize and build architecture by manipulating digital reality and testing out their visual compatibility using VR. Even in the smartphone industry, 5G will enhance the user experience.

Breakthrough for Smartphone Videography

Not only this, the 5G-enabled smartphones will provide better broadband connectivity and a reliable network to facilitate a smooth mobile experience. Amalgamated with the internet of things, the smartphone industry will enable the creation of a smart environment around its users. There has been a significant rise in video content consumption and creation in 2020. Now, with 5G and its negligent lag time, seamless streaming of video in 4k to 8K resolutions will take place within seconds.

E-sports to touch new horizons

The gaming industry will see one of the biggest changes in its day-to-day operations. It will leverage the robust connectivity, and device and network management ability of 5G to create an IoT ecosystem. Using AR/VR products supported by 5G, they will be able to introduce a new set of an Alternate reality, adding a digital dimension to gaming. They will develop a new set of games consisting of Holographic imagery, smart glasses, sophisticated gaming systems that smoothly connect to provide an immersive user experience.

Innovation in Healthcare and Automobile sectors

5G will give life to the long-existing plans of telemedicine and telehealth, especially in rural areas. The reliable and flexible connectivity will change rural healthcare and educate people far and wide about ailments and how to deal with them. Even though these facilities have existed previously, poor connectivity did not allow their full potential to be harnessed. However, 5G is bound to change all this. It will also transform the automobile industry, allowing car manufacturers to build transportation that will sync in with other vehicles using 5G and allow for smooth traffic control, safer traveling, better emergency response, and much more. It would tap into the Internet of Things ecosystems, and exchange data and location in real-time without a glitch.

Possibilities are endless

The potential for change with 5G is vast and is still being explored. With the pandemic increasing the dependency on technology, 5G is being deployed faster than the previous generations of wireless connectivity. Its positive successes in Eastern Europe and China in terms of better connectivity, faster data transfer, streaming, and reliability have bolstered India to be future-ready so it can welcome 5G with open arms. Let’s aim to work together and bring the future closer to us.
