Corning Announces Rough And Tough Glass

In an event held on Thursday (24 April) Corning announced the availability of two of its important glass technologies in India, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with Native Damage Resistance and Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass. The former was first introduced at CES 2013, and the latter at CES 2014.

Seeing that several top domestic device makers have already adopted Corning Gorilla Glass for use in their smartphones, the company is looking to further develop its customer base and drive adoption on additional models. Formed through Corning’s proprietary fusion draw process, its smooth surface, thinness, and optical clarity makes the glass the perfect solution for touch-enabled devices.

Gorilla Glass 3 with NDR is the firm's latest formulation, and offers all of the attributes Gorilla Glass is known for while offering improved scratch resistance. As touch technologies proliferate, consumers are becoming aware of how bacteria can exist on mobile devices, particularly as they increasingly share touch-enabled surfaces at home, work, and elsewhere. Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass helps address this growing concern.

If one talks about the company's reach, the Corning Gorilla Glass is currently on more than 33 major brands, 2,400 product models, and 2.4 billion devices are in use today. It is manufactured in the United States, Korea, and Taiwan

In comparison with Gorilla Glass 2, Gorilla Glass 3 with NDR improves scratch resistance - 3 times improvement in the force required to cause lateral cracking. It also reduces scratch visibility - 40 per cent reduction in the number of highly visible scratches

Coming to the antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass, it is the world’s first antimicrobial cover glass and is US EPA certified. This product combines the renowned benefits of Corning Gorilla Glass technology, including durability, scratch resistance and toughness, with a built-in antimicrobial property to last the lifetime of the display cover glass.

The technology in the core of the glass formulation is based on ionic silver, which is embedded in the glass forming a reservoir of ionic silver that makes it long lasting with no degradation of antimicrobial activity through the lifetime of the device.

“We are pleased to announce the launch of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with Native Damage Resistance in India. With the proliferation of touch-enabled devices including smartphones, tablets and notebooks, India is an important market for Corning. In addition to improved scratch resistance, Gorilla Glass 3 maintains the same thinness and optical clarity of previous versions, allowing for slimmer and sleeker devices, brighter images, and better touch sensitivity,” said Amit Bansal, President, Corning Technologies India.

Talking about the revenue, Corning Gorilla Glass is a part of Corning specialty materials. This segment accounts for approximately 15 per cent of Corning’s nearly $8 billion sales for 2013.

Presence In India
Corning’s environmental technologies, optical communications, ilfe sciences, and specialty materials segments all have a presence in Gurgaon, India. Corning’s sales team in India sells directly to supply chain partners of domestic mobile players. These supply chain partners are largely based in China.
