The Maharashtra government plans to amend 199 existing Acts to replace the word Bombay with Mumbai, the state's Minister for Culture Vinod Tawde said.
"There are Acts, including the Bombay Police Act and the Bombay Rent Act, which need to be amended," Tawde said while replying to a debate about preservation of culture, heritage and Marathi language in the Legislative Assembly.
Referring to the change of name of Bombay High Court, Tawde said that the matter is under the jurisdiction of Supreme Court and the Maharashtra government was pursuing it with the Centre.
The government is in the process of restructuring the Department of Marathi Language and has accepted the Nagnath Kothapally Committee Report on preservation of Marathi language, the minister said. He added that the report states there are 60 dialects of Marathi and all these will be digitised.
There is also a plan to create a "books village" near Mahableshwar or Ganpatipule to encourage the culture of reading Marathi literature, he said.
