Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), Big Data, cloud computing, and blockchain — had it not been for the mavericks of innovative, indigenous technology, would India have known that a digital revolution was about to disrupt personal and professional lives like never before? To honour the efforts of India’s definitive list of tech startups, and to spread the word about their disruptive technologies, BW TechTors identified 35 tech companies as ‘the ones to watch out for’ in its first edition.
The awardees were selected through a robust two-step selection process. The jury shortlisted 50 tech companies. In the second round, the jury selected the top 35 tech companies based on their financial performance, initial traction of the business and sheer disruptive quotient of the technologies employed in the business model.
The main eligibility criteria for the nominations required that the enterprise be registered for at least a year before the date of first call for nominations. The candidate also had to be a First Generation Entrepreneur, ie. an entrepreneur who is not in the same line of business as his or her parent. The enterprise had to be an outcome of the founders’ own initiative, idea or innovation. In the case of enterprises that had more than one co-founder, at least one of the co-founders had to adhere to the criteria mentioned. The jury panel was made up of judges with an entrepreneurial background, who make investment decisions for a living. The panel comprised:
* Anjli Jain, Managing Partner, EVC Venture
* Sunil Rao, Partner Business Services, Lightspeed India Partners
* Amar Pandit, Founder, Happyness Factory
* C.R Chandrasekhar, CEO & Founder, FundsIndia.com
* Tanuj Shori, Founder & CEO, Square Yards
In the ‘Rising Stars’ category, eight startups showing potential to keep growing and to making it big, were honoured. In the main category of ‘Definitive Winners’, 27 startups won the title of BW TechTors.
The judges’ decisions to honour these startups has been duly validated. Indus OS, a ‘Rising Star’ in our list, is a leading developer of mobile operating systems (OS) in Indic languages for the next billion Indian mobile users. Byju’s is by and large recognised as a leader in educational technology (edtech). Darwinbox is organising the enterprise HR sector, using Big Data and ML. Stellapps is a startup that is organising the dairy industry using IoT.
