BW Most Influential Woman Of India: Sushma Swaraj, External Affairs Minister, GoI
‘He is the one Supreme Power and wise men call him by different names’, elucidated Sushma Swaraj External Affairs Minister during her recent landmark visit to Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC). She was visiting the OIC foreign ministers conference as a guest of honour. India had been invited for the OIC conference in late 70’s but OIC cancelled the invite on the request of another member. Stage was same request of cancellation was same but this time Guest was not the same. A very active woman on all spheres of policy making and always available when needed, Swaraj is known for her quick turnaround time. Apart from being elected as Member of Parliament for the seventh time, Swaraj is known for being the second woman to hold the MEA position.

It is only Swaraj’s tenure that India has reclaimed many landmark trade deals with African continent and Middle East nations, while exploring new opportunities in Europe. The trade between India and China has witnessed an upswing though conflicts were going on parallel. MEA, under Swaraj, has continuously proven herself.
Swaraj’s impressive address to United Nations General Assembly last year had reiterated and assured India’s commitment to achieve sustainable development goals (SDG’s set by UN) well within the deadline. Swaraj’s path breaking visit to Kuwait's top leadership, including Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah will also be remembered for discussions on a range of issues to strengthen the bilateral ties, besides raising the Indian community's concerns specific to their treatment in Kuwait. Swaraj’s during the same visit had been to Doha where she met Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and discussed ways to move forward on the roadmap set by the top leaders of the two countries.
Ties with Combodia, India’s improved relation with Iran, the landmark agreement on Duqm port of Oman and Chabahar in Iran will always be remembered as turning point for India’s external affairs policy decisions having direct impact on India’s rising might on exports. Her power packed addresses have always made lasting impact on the multilateral or bilateral ties of India. During her recent visit to Morocco she said, “I came here with heavy heart, but I decided to come here post a deadly terrorist attack on our soldiers”. I have done it, as Morocco is fighting with radicalisation and it is my duty to stand together with any such nation which is doing best of its efforts to fight against menace of terrorism.
Like a complete woman Swaraj is also admired in her family for her homely roles of wife and mother. Indian electorate will also remember her skills of learning different languages and being proficient in the languages. Earlier to her current position she has also served as leader of opposition in parliament of India. She will also be remembered for being first woman chief minister of Delhi and for her initiatives of transforming Delhi into a world class city.
