BT's Cloud Forays

British multinational BT announced a clutch of cloud services — BT One Cloud Cisco, BT One Cloud Lync and BT for Life Sciences — to support customers in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (AMEA). Kevin Taylor, president of BT AMEA, said in a call from Hong Kong that the AMEA business unit has doubled orders year-on-year and won 8 out of 10 bids so far this year.  Under BT One Cloud Cisco, it will offer full unified communications capabilities, including high-definition voice, multiparty HD video and instant messaging.

BT is initiating a new phase of investments in the AMEA to accelerate its expansion into high growth markets. It is focusing on growth opportunities in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.

While BT is looking to launch these services in India too, there are regulatory issues to take stock of. Under Indian laws, one cannot connect an IP to a TDM (time division multiplex) network. “However, it will depend on regulatory approvals needed,” says Mridul Srivastava,Director -Marketing, BT India. The other area of potential growth in India is in Life Sciences. Srivastava points out that with the increasing presence of ckinical research companies in India, demand is expected to rise. BT has closed some deals with pharmaceutical companies and clinical research companies. However, it did not divulge any names.

While the focus on the IT/ITeS sector in India continues, BT India will also address multiple customer segments, including financial services, pharmaceuticals, retail, health and global telecom customers. It is also strengthening its portfolio to address the diverse needs of customers that includes cloud based services, enhanced security, consulting led engagement and BYOD (bring your own device) among others. For the time being the focus of BT India will be on large corporations.
