The drug regulators in India on Friday approved the emergency use authorization for the Covid-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the Oxford University. The Covishield vaccine is being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, which is a Pune based vaccine manufacturing company also the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer which has tied with AstraZeneca to manufacture Covishield.

The approval comes right after the UK’s Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulators granted the authorization to AstraZeneca’s vaccine in order to provide immunity against the Corona Virus. Although the final approval will be coming from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) VG Somani for the final approval, which will pave its way for the vaccine’s rollout in India which has the world’s second worst outbreak.

The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) on Covid-19 vaccine of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), which had earlier sought additional safety and immunogenicity data from the Serum Institute of India deliberated on its application seeking emergency use authorization for the shots on Wednesday and met again to review the matter on Friday.

After the SII’s application the Subject Expert Committee of the CDSCO started reviewing the application by Bharat Biotech for its Covid-19 vaccine, Covaxin but is yet to take a final decision on that according to the reports of India TV.
