The world's largest e-retailer Amazon.com has entered the India market by offering marketplace at www.amazon.in which will sell books, movies and TV shows. The company will operate in India through Amazon Seller Services Private Ltd and will shortly add mobile phones and cameras to its offerings. Greg Greeley, Vice President of International Expansion at Amazon.com said in a press release “We're excited to get started in India and we will relentlessly focus on raising the bar for customer experience in India.”

Till recently Amazon only offered a shopping comparsion site Junglee.com to its prospective Indian customers. While Amazon is not selling its own inventory, the India site offers a marketplace for Indian retailers, a relatively cheap and easy way to enter a market. Sellers will have the option of taking advantage of Amazon's packing, delivery, returns and customer service logistical support. The marketplace to begin with will offer 7 million books and 12,000 movies and TV shows in English and Hindi.

“Our vision is to become a trusted and meaningful sales channel for retailers of all sizes across India, enabling them to succeed and efficiently grow their business online,” said Amit Agarwal, Vice President and Country Manager, Amazon India. “With fulfillment by Amazon, we will do the heavy lifting for the sellers so that they can focus on core business functions like sourcing and pricing their products.”
