The first observation raised by experts post the interim budget presented by stand-in Finance Minister Piyush Goyal was – was it really an interim Budget?
The far-reaching sops to farmers and the middle class were arguably a political step, but questions were raised whether the occasion merited such steps.
Notwithstanding a debate around the interim budget, the fact is that it read like PM Narendra Modi’s election pitch – something that would get him reflected in the 209 general elections.
The interim Budget though was roundly hailed – as the following pages with columns by industry captains establish. The biggest grouse however was that the interim budget did little to address the jobs crisis – with unemployment at its 45-year high, as suggested by recent media reports.
These broad trends are corroborated by an industry survey commissioned by BW Businessworld (in the following pages).
An aside – As shown in the survey, many consider Piyush Goyal as the best bet for the FM job.
