2 Indian Americans Charged

Federal prosecutors have charged two Indian Americans for their roles in a conspiracy to import and traffic in counterfeit perfume.

The indictment in this regard was unsealed on Monday in the Eastern District Court of New York, the Department of Justice said.

Sanjay Anandani, 34, was arrested on December 1 from Secaucus in New Jersey, and Rohit, 28, surrendered to authorities in New Jersey on December 2.

The duo, both residents of New Jersey, made their first court appearance on December 5.

Charged on two counts, the two individuals face a maximum 15 years in prison, and a fine amounting to USD 2,250,000.

The indictment alleges that Anandani and Rohit imported three shipping containers with counterfeit perfume during 2009 and 2010, as well as 4,600 fragrance boxes bearing counterfeit perfume trademarks.

The two-count indictment filed in the eastern district of New York, charges each defendant with conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit goods and trafficking in counterfeit goods, the Justice Department said.
