Anirban Sarkar, Managing Director, Deccan Water Treatment Pvt. Ltd. believes that quality and after sales service goes a long way into the path of a successful business. Passionate about cars and believing in learning the language of the land, Sarkar is a recipient of Rashtriya Udyog Ratan Award from Indian Organization for Business Research and Development for penetrating into remote villages of Karnataka and successfully installing and running water treatment systems to treat Fluoride, Total Dissolved Solids and Arsenic contamination in ground water. In conversation with BW Businessworld, Sarkar talks about his growth plans and his vision for the company.

With a turnover of Rs 2,000 crore and a manpower of 350 people, Pune (Maharashtra)-based Deccan Water Treatment Pvt. Ltd. (DWTPL) is an ISO 9001:2008 certified organization. DWTPL is promoted by group of technocrats committed to excellence in the field of drinking water treatment, waste water management and solar energy. With a wide and varied experience, the company has successfully implemented projects for various clients in different segments of industry.

Q. Over 17 years of operations in the water treatment industry, how has been the journey so far?
The journey was interesting and challenging as well. We initially started with packaged Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), gradually moving to technologically savvy Sewage Treatment options like Suspended Media Bio Reactor (SMBR) and Sludge Return Bio Reactor (SRBR). This successful transformation encouraged us to experiment with innovative Sewage Treatment Processes such as Ultra Violet rays by indigenously developed Floating Bed Catalytic Reactor wherein the treated sewage is fit for recycling and reuse in flushing and gardening without any tertiary treatment.

We at DWTPL, possess the expertise to offer solutions to the obvious and not so obvious concerns pertaining to water and waste water. Our company is a pioneer in the manufacture of R.O systems for drinking water specialized in desalination, deflouridation and arsenic removal.

With an exponential growth in the field of water and waste water treatment, in 2010 we diversified into new emerging area of Solar Energy. The company is now focusing into water treatment and renewable energy.

Q. Any plans to foray into newer cities?
DWTPL has its presence not only in India, but in eight countries including East Africa, West Africa, Bangladesh and UAE. We have full-fledged offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Goa and Pune being the Head Office. In Pune we dominate 70% of the market share and look forward to strengthen our presence in the existing cities in India. Plans are afoot to open office in two more countries.

DWTPL specializes in the field of water and waste water treatment processes and aims to provide full and final solutions to the water problems and to ensure satisfaction of its clients.

Q. Did you plan to diversify the business further?
This year we are looking at diversifying into two main verticals: Cleaning of rivers and Security Systems. We are in an advanced stage of discussion with IIT Mumbai to tie up with them for river treatments. In addition, we are in talks with a Canadian company who has the technology of cleaning of rivers. We are looking at getting this technology in India. The rivers are contaminated and polluted and it is paramount to clean them. We are in talks with state governments to implement river treatment mechanism across various cities. By March this year we will start up with 1-2 pilot projects (first being Pune). Security systems will be a big market in near future. We will launch our long range cameras, night vision cameras, CCTVs, which will be purely for government entities and not for private players. We coming up with security systems in smart cities. Tenders are coming up from cities across the country and we will bid for the same and render our services to the states. So far we have partner with L&T for providing security systems in Mumbai.

Q. What is the vision of the company?

Water is scarce and hence our vision is to recycle sewage water into drinking water. In Western countries sewage water is transformed into fresh water and widely used. In India it is just a mental block and soon this will be a reality.
