IIT Madras and the TVS group firm Harita Seating Systems Limited (HSSL) have joined hands to address road accidents by collaboratively develop disruptive products to enhance road safety.  IITM will transfer technologies know how that have been developed indigenously to HSSL on ubiquitous monitoring of driver performance and behaviour.
Both IITM and HSSL plan to leverage their extensive experience in product development and manufacturing to make in India commercially viable products to enhance road safety for all stakeholders.
Venkatesh Balasubramanian, professor, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras said, “It is unique opportunity that the concepts developed and  tested in lab as a design tool could be transferred to a leading manufacturer in the automobile industry.  We believe that we could assist HSSL launch intelligent safety systems incorporated products in the near future and thereby make a small contribution from IITM in the journey of safe roads in India.”
A research says about 4,00,517 accidental deaths were reported in India in 2013. Of these, about 34.3 per cent (1,37,423) of them have been attributed to road accidents. This unfortunate statistic of a death in every four minutes is not only a sad statistic but also puts India nearly at the top of the world for unsafe roads.
Sharing his views on the technology transfer, A. G. Giridharan, president, Haritha Seating Systems Ltd. said, “We look forward to the challenges of taking a disruptive product concepts to a viable market-ready product in a shortest possible time.  It is our privilege to join this march with IIT Madras to develop technological solutions and enhance driver comfort and safety.”
